Tim Wilson on New Glasses

Tim Wilson on New Glasses

Happy Holidays, and Happy New Glasses!

My wife and I both got new glasses this month, and we're experiencing the same things you are. Especially remarkable for me in seeing so many changes is the fact that my prescription hadn't changed! I replaced the old glasses because the lenses were scratched and their coating was peeling off. But I literally had trouble walking because the world was suddenly in so much clearer focus - I had to learn all over again where the ground was!

I suspect that those of us with glasses are more acutely aware, at least on a subconscious level, of the difference between perception and reality. We know the world as both "corrected" and "uncorrected," and remain aware that they are not at all the same thing in some very important ways.

We can also wonder in new ways with our new glasses about the usefulness of the distinction between "hardware" and "software" for human systems. Do glasses change your dreams because of changes to your consciousness, your unconsciousness - or, in some subtle way, the subtle physical processes that are part of dreaming, since vision is, after all, a physical process itself?

Cool stuff, Dave. I'm surprised there was even one of your readers who wondered why you talked about your new glasses - for many of your longtime readers, like me, this is at the heart of what we love about The Dave Experience...
