Somehow I got my hands on a DEC Rainbow manual, and I lovingly studied all the specs dreaming of the possibilities. I probably still have the manual somewhere. Later, I worked one summer as an operator on a VAX 11-780 -- what a blast. DEC could have been king. They ruled the scientific computing roost at a time when the only computers outside of mainframes were in the science labs, and at a time when the only dudes diddling with PCs were hardcore.
