Dave,
This is what Java is:
Java is interpreted, transferring the power of the compiler from the developer's context to *all* of the end users' contexts.
Java will be ubiquitous, allowing persistent objects to finally have methods.
Java is garbage-collected, eliminating memory management code and bugs.
