cactus picture Advertising and The Internet - Intro
By Barry Frankel, bfrankel@ix.netcom.com.

Welcome to BarryNet.

Dave Winer and I have been chatting for the last month or so about the Internet and why advertising is not working. As an experiment Dave asked me if I was interested in having my own "channel". And that is how BarryNet started.

The mission of BarryNet is straight forward; get enough smart people thinking and sharing their thoughts and we will find a way to make advertising work on the Web.

The rules of BarryNet are the same as DaveNet. I will write some of my thoughts on an unscheduled basis, hopefully once or more per week. But to make this channel work, I need your thoughts, write me at bfrankel@ix.netcom.com. Tell me what you think show me some great ads that are working or just share an idea.

I will put some of the mail I receive up on this server for the others to see. And if we get enough people thinking and talking about advertising we will find the solution.

By this point your probably wondering a bit about me. Do I have an ax to grind or a product to sell?

I have no ax to grind. I am not in the advertising business, I do not build HTML tools. I have been in the software business for a long time. I have designed some ads and looked at millions. My company VeriVoice is a start-up that has developed an Internet security system using voiceprints.

If you want to know more about VeriVoice, follow this link to an article by Wired 's Simpson Garfinkel.

But enough on me, to get this discussion going I am posting two more documents.

The first is my email to Dave explaining my view 's on advertising. Why I think Internet advertising is not working. The second posting is my email to Dave putting up some ideas on how I think advertising should be constructed.

And a third piece is in development, where I want to show some sites that seem to be heading in the right direction.

So welcome to BarryNet.
